CBSE Class 12 Marking Scheme 2026: Passing Rules and Key Dates
CBSE concluded Class 12 exams on 10 April 2026 and expects results by the third week of May . The CBSE Class 12 Marking Scheme 2026 sets a clear 33% passing threshold and rules for practicals, improvement and compartments.
CBSE Class 12 Marking Scheme 2026: Passing Thresholds
Students must secure a minimum of 33% overall and 33% separately in theory and practical/internal assessment where applicable. For subjects with both components, CBSE requires separate passing marks in each part to declare a pass.
Key component pass marks under the marking scheme:
- For 80 (theory) + 20 (practical/IA) : 26 in theory and 7 in practical.
- For 70 + 30 : 23 in theory and 10 in practical.
- For 60 + 40 : 20 in theory and 13 in practical.
- For 50 + 50 : 16.5 in each component.
- For 30 + 70 : 10 in theory and 23 in practical.
CBSE also uses a nine-point grading scale; a grade of D2 or higher indicates a pass in that subject.
CBSE Class 12 Marking Scheme 2026: What Students Must Know
The board counts percentage using the best-of-five rule for students who take six subjects. If you have an additional sixth subject, CBSE will consider your best five subjects for percentage calculation.
To be declared passed you must clear all five main subjects. If you fail in one subject, you are eligible for a compartment exam . Students failing in two or more subjects become Essential Repeat Candidates and must repeat exams as per CBSE rules.
Students unhappy with one subject score may sit for the July 2026 supplementary/improvement exam . You can improve only one subject in July; CBSE will take the higher of the original or improved marks as your final score.
CBSE held the 2026 Class 12 exams for over 18.5 lakh students across 7500+ exam centres in India. Past pass rates varied—88.3% in 2025 and 87.9% in 2024—but the 2026 pass percentage will be clear only after results.
What this means for you: check both theory and practical component marks carefully on your mark sheet. If you miss the 33% in any component, plan immediately for the compartment or the July supplementary depending on your situation.
For any procedural details—result download, application for compartment or supplementary—follow instructions issued by CBSE and your school once results are declared.
