JNU women quota BTech 2026: Executive Council approves 11% supernumerary seats for women

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Executive Council approved 11% supernumerary seats for women in its BTech programmes on April 15, 2026 . This adds 14 seats per batch to the School of Engineering, to be filled through the JoSAA counselling mechanism.

JNU women quota BTech 2026 — what changed

The 14 additional seats are equally split between Computer Science Engineering and Electrical & Communications Engineering (that is, 7 seats each ). These seats are supernumerary, so they will operate independently of the regular merit pool of the programmes.

Currently, the regular intake stands at 63 seats each for CSE and ECE. The new women quota increases the effective availability of reserved seats for female candidates without changing the original merit seats.

A Special Committee that included faculty and external experts from IIT-Delhi, IIIT-Delhi and DTU had endorsed the proposal earlier on February 11, 2026 . The Executive Council formalised the decision at its April 15, 2026 meeting.

Admissions to these supernumerary women seats will be handled through the existing Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process for the 2026 session. Candidates should expect the seats to appear as separate options during JoSAA allocation rounds.

The university has said the percentage may be reviewed in future depending on infrastructure and will follow prevailing government norms. Official application guidelines and any category-specific rules will be issued by the university before counselling.

    Staff-ward seats and reaction

Alongside the women quota, the Executive Council approved 5% supernumerary seats for wards of teaching and non-teaching staff across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The JNU Teachers' Association (JNUTA) criticised the staff-ward provision and described it as regressive.
