NCTE ITEP 2027-28: what institutions must know
The NCTE said the shortlisting criteria for ITEP were approved at the 69th General Body meeting held on May 5, 2026 . Institutions that meet the criteria will be further evaluated against existing NCTE norms and standards before final selection.
Applicants must submit the online form at par.ncte.gov.in/itep and pay the processing fee as prescribed under the NCTE Rules, 1997 and later updates. Exact fee amounts are to be paid per those rules.
NCTE ITEP 2027-28: eligibility and ranking cutoffs
Eligible institution categories include Institutes of Eminence (IoEs), Institutions of National Importance (IoNIs) and UGC Category 1 institutions. Universities and colleges with accreditation and rankings also qualify if they meet NCTE thresholds.
NIRF-based cutoffs cited by the council are: universities ranked 1–200 , colleges ranked 1–300 , and state public universities ranked 1–100 . Institutions placed among the top 50 in NIRF subject-specific rankings related to teacher education are also eligible. The council has said universities running UG, PG and PhD programmes — including central, state, state private and deemed universities — may apply if UGC-recognised and meeting NCTE norms.
Shortlisting targets multidisciplinary institutions that meet academic and quality standards set out under NEP 2020. The NCTE emphasised that meeting an eligibility category does not guarantee selection; shortlisted institutions will undergo further evaluation against established norms.
Institutions should note the final date to submit their applications online is May 31, 2026 . The council has reiterated that processing fees must be paid according to the NCTE Rules, 1997.
Further procedural details, fee schedules and evaluation timelines were not specified in the announcement. Institutions planning to apply should use the official portal par.ncte.gov.in/itep for submission.
The shortlisting approval at the 69th General Body meeting formalises the next intake under the NEP 2020 rollout for teacher education.
