Well, a cousin of mine experienced it during his first semester. One night, some third-year seniors caught him getting back late to the hostel. They took him to the railway track between Chrompet and Pallavaram.

They walked with him, asking about his background. Then came the classic question: How many girls are in your class?
Reaching Pallavaram, they bought tickets to the beach station but made him pay for himself. When the train came, they asked him to shout some nonsense at the station as part of the ragging.
People at the station were amused.

Ragging is kind of an MIT tradition, especially during the first year and when seniors are graduating. It involves fun stuff like dancing, singing, or even bringing gifts. It's not scary, but more like a fun experience. My cousin had similar experiences a couple of times, nothing too harsh, just memorable stuff.
