When we talk about IIIT Allahabad and the newer IITs, both are solid options if you're aiming for top government engineering colleges. You get in through JEE Advanced, so the competition is tough either way.

IIIT Allahabad often gets a higher spot in rankings like JoSAA and even beats out some IITs like Dharwad or Jodhpur. Plus, its infrastructure is generally considered better than what you'll find at the newer IITs, which are still getting their facilities up to par.

Looking at IIIT Allahabad's placement stats from 2019-20, about 96% of students landed jobs with an average package of around INR 20.83 LPA. The highest package went up to INR 43 LPA, and they had about 120 companies visiting for recruitment.

If the IIT brand name matters a lot to you, then maybe a second-generation IIT is the way to go. But if you're looking at overall facilities and placement rates, IIIT Allahabad holds its own.
