From what I've heard from friends at NIT Trichy, the internet situation has gotten better.

Wi-Fi is now more reliable.
Speed depends on how close you are to a router.
Expect slower speeds when lots of people are online (like during holidays or at night).
Short power outages can knock out routers, and it might take a while to get back online.
Since Wi-Fi issues aren't always a priority for the management, getting your own internet setup is a good idea.

For faster speeds, try sitting near a router outside your room or head to the Octagon or Annex (the computer centers at NIT Trichy). LAN connections could solve most internet problems on campus, but there's no timeline for when they'll be available.
