Yeah, since the rooms were originally designed for single occupancy, having two people might feel a bit cramped. But it shouldn't be too bad because they're adding double-decker beds.

There'll still be enough space for two tables and chairs. Plus, the rooms have good ventilation. If you'd rather sleep on the floor, you can even remove the double-decker beds. You'll each get your own cupboard for your stuff.

Compared to some places like IIT BHU, where they arrange three beds in a U-shape with a table in the middle, IIIT Guwahati is better off. If you're still unsure, try visiting the campus or chatting with current students to get the real scoop.
