Well, a cousin of mine went to SRM University, and here's what I learned from him about your question:

Honestly, I'm not sure how true that statement is. SRM University feels pretty local, like a university in Uttar Pradesh or Bihar.
Out of 3000 staff, only a handful are from IITs. Most are from self-financing colleges affiliated with Anna University.
Some faculty are from deemed universities like Satyabhama, Vels, and Bharath University.
Many management department teachers come from Vinayaka Mission University and Alagappa University.
The physics and math staff are often from local colleges.
The CSE department doesn't always have the best teachers; many are SRM graduates themselves.
There aren't many visiting faculty either.

It's a good idea to check the official website for faculty profiles. SRM is a local university, so its scope might be limited.
