So, at MIT, there are some unique 'traditions' and 'rituals' for freshers. Back in 2012, when a friend joined, MIT started cracking down on ragging. Day scholars mostly avoided it, but hostellers had to interact with seniors.

One crazy tradition is the MIT oath – a poem with artistic (and slightly foul) language. Freshers had to recite it to seniors without laughing.

Another tradition was the MIT salute, where you salute seniors with your hands tucked in. My friend found these things pretty wild as a fresher. But, honestly, they also acted as icebreakers between seniors and freshers. Now, MIT's rules are more relaxed, and juniors usually go in groups to introduce themselves to seniors with the salute and oath.
