From what I've heard from a friend studying at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, the Mechanical Engineering program has some cool aspects:

The department is working with TVS to update the curriculum to match what the industry needs. TVS keeps an eye on students from the start, so they're ready to jump into work by their final year.
The labs are well-equipped with stuff like UTM, injection molding machines, and CNCs.
The alumni network is pretty solid, with regular meetups at the department.
The teachers are well-known in their fields and will support you if you want to pursue higher education like MS, ME, Ph.D., or MBA.
