Eligibility

To qualify for the Abel Visiting Scholarship 2025, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of a developing country, including India, as defined by the International Mathematics Union (IMU) at the time of application.
  • Be under 35 years of age at the application deadline (extensions possible for career interruptions).
  • Possess a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics.
  • Be an early-career researcher holding a working contract at a university or college, but not yet a full professor.
  • Hold a position at a university or research institution.

Note:

  • The age limit may be extended by up to three years for documented career interruptions.
  • Applicants must provide a clear explanation for any career breaks in their application.
  • Applications from women mathematicians are highly encouraged.
Benefits

Successful candidates will receive a grant of up to $5,000, which can be used to cover the following expenses:

  • Travel Costs: Economy-class airfare to the host institution.
  • Public Transportation: Rail or bus fare between the nearest airport city and the applicant's home or the host institution. Up to four taxi fares (with receipts) for airport/station transfers.
  • Pre-Departure/Arrival Accommodation: Reimbursement for a maximum of one night's hotel stay before departure or upon arrival, if necessary.
  • Visa Fees: Costs associated with obtaining a visa for the host country.
  • Travel Insurance: Coverage for travel insurance.
  • Living Costs: A daily allowance for basic living expenses, including local transportation, based on the cost of living in the host city. If accommodation includes meals, the daily allowance will be adjusted.
  • Accommodation Costs: Hotel accommodation for up to four weeks is permitted only if the host institution cannot provide guest housing or rented apartments. For longer stays, applicants must find suitable apartments or guesthouses. (Note: Cash payments are not accepted; payments must be made via trackable methods.)
  • Public Holiday Periods: Daily living allowance will not be provided if the host institution is closed during public holidays, but accommodation costs may be covered.

The grant is disbursed in two installments:

  • The first installment covers accommodation, travel insurance, visa fees, airport transportation, and 50% of living costs, paid before departure.
  • The second installment covers the remaining living costs, upon submission of a detailed report, photographs, and original invoices to the IMU Secretariat.

Note:

  • The grant does not cover additional trips for conferences or workshops; these must be covered by the grantee or host institution.
  • Living and accommodation costs are not covered for personal or non-research-related stays.
  • A detailed financial report, excluding living costs, with original invoices and boarding passes, must be submitted.
  • The financial and activity report, along with photographs and invoices, must be submitted to the IMU Secretariat within two weeks of the research visit's conclusion.
  • Any unspent funds must be returned to CDC/Abel Funds.

How to Apply

To apply for the Abel Visiting Scholarship 2025, follow these steps:

Selection Criteria

Selection is based on the project's quality and its potential benefits to the applicant's home institution/country.

The selection committee includes a chairperson appointed by the IMU Executive Committee (EC), a member from the CDC, and another member from the IMU EC. They evaluate applications and select successful candidates. Members 2 and 3 serve three-year terms (maximum two terms each). The IMU EC determines the term length for member 1.
