What is JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced is the second hurdle after JEE Main for those dreaming of studying at an IIT. Only the top 2.5 lakh students from JEE Main get to take on JEE Advanced. It's your ticket to the IITs and is known as one of the toughest exams worldwide. The exam happens every year and is run by one of the 7 IITs or IISc Bangalore in a computer-based format, under the Joint Admission Board (JAB).
In the last session, 1,87,223 students registered for the JEE Advanced exam. Of these, 1,80,422 took both papers, and 54,378 passed and qualified for IIT admission.
What makes JEE Advanced tricky is its changing exam pattern. Unlike many exams where you know the marking scheme and details beforehand, JEE Advanced likes to keep some things secret until exam day. The things you do know are:
- The exam has two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. You have to take both.
- Each paper has three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Maths.
- Each paper lasts for three hours.
- The exam is on a computer, and questions are in English and Hindi.
- The marking scheme, number of questions, and types of questions are revealed on the exam day.

JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026, there are five key criteria you need to meet. These criteria cover the number of attempts allowed, required JEE Main scores, age limit, Class XII appearance, and prior admissions to IITs. Understanding these criteria is crucial before you start your preparation.
#1. Number of attempts in JEE Advanced 2026
You can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times, and these attempts must be in consecutive years. If you appeared for JEE Advanced in 2025 for the first time, you are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2026. Similarly, if you appear for JEE Advanced 2026 for the first time, you can participate in JEE Advanced 2027. However, if you took JEE Advanced in 2024 or earlier, you are not eligible to appear in JEE Advanced 2026. This rule ensures that candidates have a fair chance within a limited timeframe.
#2. JEE Main 2026 Scores Needed for JEE Advanced Eligibility
To be eligible for JEE Advanced, you must be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in the BE/BTech Paper of JEE (Main) 2026. The number of JEE Main candidates selected from each category for JEE Advanced is as follows:

Candidates must have been born on or after October 1, 2001. However, a five-year age relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates, meaning they should have been born on or after October 1, 1996. This age criterion is in place to ensure that candidates are of the appropriate maturity level to handle the rigorous academic environment of the IITs.
#4. Appearance in Class XII (or equivalent) examination
Candidates who passed Class 12 in 2025 or will qualify in 2026 are eligible for JEE Advanced 2026. If you appeared in Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2024 or earlier, you are NOT eligible to appear in JEE Advanced 2026, regardless of the subjects you attempted. This rule ensures that candidates are recent graduates of their secondary education.
#5. Earlier admission to IITs
You should NOT have been admitted to an IIT previously, irrespective of whether you continued in the program or accepted an IIT seat by reporting "online" or at a "reporting center" in the past. This criterion ensures that JEE Advanced is an opportunity for new aspirants and not for those who have already benefited from IIT admissions.

JEE Advanced 2026 Exam Pattern

- Mode of the exam: The examination is conducted ONLY in the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode.
