Graduate Route deadline: September 2026 intake decides two-year post-study work rights for Indian students aiming for Skilled Worker conversion

The Home Office rule confirms that students who apply on or before December 31, 2026 will receive two years on the Graduate Route; applications made on or after January 1, 2027 get 18 months . This change is set out in Immigration Rules HC 1691 and reflected on the GOV.UK Graduate visa page.

Graduate Route deadline: what the law says

The cut was confirmed on October 14, 2025 in HC 1691. GOV.UK guidance updated in May 2026 states clearly that the Graduate Route duration is determined by the date you apply, not by your course start or graduation date.

PhD graduates remain unchanged and continue to receive three years on the Graduate Route.

Graduate Route deadline — who this affects and how

A one-year Master’s starting in September 2026 will graduate in time to apply before December 31, 2026 , so those students can secure two years of post-study work. A January 2027 starter will not be able to apply before the cutoff and therefore will be limited to 18 months .

Indian nationals received 90,153 Graduate Route grants in 2025, making up 42% of extensions issued that year. The intake timing therefore has a large impact on Indian students' post-study options.

Compliance, refusals and the RAG system

A new Red-Amber-Green (RAG) compliance system goes live on June 1, 2026 . Universities with visa refusal rates above 5% will get a Red rating, which can trigger CAS restrictions or sponsor suspensions.

India’s national visa refusal rate was about 4.75% in 2025 , up 78% year-on-year . That rise, combined with university-level RAG ratings, is already affecting recruitment: 76% of UK universities reported a drop in Indian enrolments and overall international enrolments fell 31% year-on-year.

Conversion to Skilled Worker and salary threshold

To move from the Graduate Route to a Skilled Worker visa you need a job from a licensed sponsor that meets the minimum salary. The Skilled Worker threshold is £41,700 per year after a 59% rise in April 2024 (previously £26,200 ).

The shorter post-study window from January 2027 intake reduces the time graduates have to find qualifying employment.

    Practical deadlines and student actions

Most September 2026 course application deadlines close by May–June 2026 . If you plan a September intake and want the full two-year Graduate Route, ensure your provider can confirm course completion to the Home Office and be ready to apply once your provider notifies completion.

Also check your university’s current RAG/compliance position before paying deposits or accepting offers. Russell Group universities have historically lower refusal rates, which reduces sponsor risk.

The Graduate Route deadline now changes the stakes of intake choice: for one-year Master’s students aiming to convert to Skilled Worker, September 2026 preserves two years; January 2027 does not.
