WB UG admission: who can apply and how
Students who have passed Class 12 or an equivalent exam from a recognised board can apply online at wbcap.in. There is no application fee and each applicant may choose up to 25 courses in a single application. The portal is designed to cut down on duplicate admissions and streamline seat allocation across covered colleges.
The system sends system-generated SMS and email alerts; applicants can also track progress via a personal dashboard on the portal.
WB UG admission: which colleges are included
The centralised process covers 460 government-aided and state-linked general degree colleges. The portal does not include Presidency University, Jadavpur University, autonomous colleges, professional institutions (engineering, medical, law, pharmacy, nursing), minority or private/self-financing colleges.
WBSCHE’s announcement clarifies that those excluded institutions will follow their own admission procedures.
Reservation change and immediate impact
The state government has reverted to the 2010 OBC reservation norms , cutting the OBC quota in colleges from 17% to 7% . The recognised state OBC list now has 66 classes , down from 140 under the expanded list. A reported 74 sub-castes were removed from the reservation list; media reported many of these belong to Muslim communities.
Jadavpur University’s vice-chancellor confirmed the university will follow the state order for admissions, and Presidency University indicated it would apply the latest directive.
