AIIMS Delhi interim director: Dr Nikhil Tandon given additional charge under Rule 9(4) for six months

AIIMS New Delhi has assigned Professor Dr Nikhil Tandon to look after the functions of AIIMS Delhi interim director with immediate effect under Rule 9(4) of AIIMS Rules, 2019. The six-month arrangement carries no extra pay.

    AIIMS, New Delhi has assigned Dr Nikhil Tandon to look after the functions of the AIIMS Delhi interim director with immediate effect. The order was communicated through an office memorandum issued by AIIMS.

    AIIMS Delhi interim director: terms under Rule 9(4)

    The assignment has been made under Rule 9(4) of the AIIMS Rules, 2019. The working arrangement is effective immediately and will remain in place for six months or until a regular incumbent is appointed, whichever is earlier.

    The memorandum states that Dr Tandon will perform director functions in addition to his existing duties. The appointment carries no additional remuneration or honorarium .

    Dr Nikhil Tandon is a professor and head of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at AIIMS and also serves as Dean (Academic). He is a noted endocrinologist and clinician-researcher who specialises in cardio-metabolic diseases and diabetes care.

    The office memorandum names the president of AIIMS, Delhi as the authority ordering the temporary arrangement under the cited rule of the institute’s regulations.

    Why the change happened and immediate facts

    The assignment follows the departure of Dr M Srinivas, who was appointed AIIMS director in 2022 and has moved to become a full-time member of NITI Aayog. AIIMS has not announced a timeline for selecting a permanent director.

    The memorandum does not list additional financial benefits for the interim charge and does not alter Dr Tandon’s current academic and departmental responsibilities.
