Delhi govt sacks 142 guest teachers after DM recommendation

Delhi govt sacks 142 guest teachers after the District Magistrate (Old Delhi) recommended their removal on April 24, 2026 , over alleged non-participation in census duty. The recommendation targets 142 guest teachers who are on short-term annual contracts due to expire on May 8, 2026 .

Delhi govt sacks 142 guest teachers: GSTA calls action unfair

The Government Schools Teachers’ Association (GSTA) wrote to Education Minister Ashish Sood asking the Delhi government to reconsider and withdraw the proposed dismissals. GSTA said the move is unnecessarily harsh and does not reflect ground realities for guest teachers.

GSTA argued that many guest teachers missed census duty because of low pay, heavy workload and lack of support. The association highlighted that daily wages have not increased in nearly eight years , making additional duties hard to accept without extra compensation.

GSTA demanded immediate withdrawal of the termination recommendation and asked that contracts be allowed to continue without disruption during the summer break. The association also asked for timely payment of salaries and extra compensation for census duty similar to what regular teachers receive.

The matter has been shared with officials in the education and census departments in New Delhi. As of April 28, 2026 , the Delhi government had not responded to GSTA’s appeal.

    Timeline and deadlines

    • Termination recommendation issued by District Magistrate (Old Delhi): April 24, 2026 .
    • Guest teachers' short-term annual contracts end: May 8, 2026 .

The impending contract expiry makes the proposed removals time-sensitive. GSTA says taking strict action days before contract expiry serves little administrative purpose and increases stress for teachers already working under uncertain conditions.

No official details on the amount of census-duty compensation paid to regular teachers were included in GSTA’s letter, and the Delhi government has not provided a statement on the recommended terminations. The association framed the absences as genuine difficulties rather than misconduct.

Students and parents are unlikely to see immediate classroom changes before the summer break, but the dispute could affect staffing decisions if terminations proceed. Education and census departments now hold the next steps in a case that centres on pay, workload and administrative fairness.
