NCERT textbook distribution review: Pradhan orders last-mile monitoring
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on April 28, 2026 reviewed the availability, printing and distribution of NCERT textbooks for the ongoing academic session. He directed officials to monitor last-mile delivery closely, with special attention to rural areas.
Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy Sanjay Kumar and senior officials from the Ministry of Education and NCERT attended the meeting. The ministry issued a statement outlining the review and its directives.
What the NCERT textbook distribution review covered
The minister reviewed preparation of upcoming NCERT textbooks and assessed stock positions across states and Union territories. Officials reported on printing schedules and coordination with state authorities.
The meeting examined the role of distribution agencies and asked for stronger coordination to ensure timely delivery. Pradhan directed that printing capacity be augmented where necessary and supply chains be strengthened to avoid bottlenecks.
How the NCERT textbook distribution review affects students
The ministry emphasised that no student should face inconvenience because of delays. If you are waiting for physical textbooks, especially in a rural area, officials have been asked to track last-mile delivery until copies reach schools and households.
As an interim measure, the minister highlighted the availability of digital textbooks on e-Pathshala to support uninterrupted learning until physical copies arrive. The ministry suggested using e-Pathshala for immediate access to textbook content.
Administrative steps and monitoring asked by the minister
Pradhan instructed officials to closely monitor stock positions and distribution progress across states and Union territories. He asked for immediate measures where printing backlogs exist and for tighter oversight of distribution agencies.
Secretary Sanjay Kumar and senior Ministry and NCERT officials will oversee follow-up actions, according to the ministry statement. The focus is on supply-chain strengthening and augmenting printing capacity where required.
The ministry released its statement on April 28, 2026 ; the related press note recorded a publication time of 05:08 PM IST and a 1-minute read indicator. The statement reiterates the aim that students should not face delays in receiving textbooks and that digital access via e-Pathshala can bridge short-term gaps.
The review is a part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Education and NCERT to ensure timely textbook availability for the current academic session. Officials will continue to coordinate with state authorities and distribution agencies to implement the minister’s directions.
