DU SOL online foreign language courses to go fully online from 2026–2027

The University of Delhi's School of Open Learning (SOL) will convert its foreign language programmes to fully online delivery starting the 2026–2027 academic session. The Executive Council has recently approved the move to make eight one-year diploma and certificate languages available via a dedicated digital platform.

DU SOL online foreign language courses: what is changing

SOL will offer 8 one-year diploma/certificate languages under two departments: Germanic and Romance Studies (French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian) and East Asian Studies (Chinese, Korean, Japanese). Each course runs for one year and will be delivered through a specialised online portal with video lectures, interactive assignments and flexible timetables.

The Executive Council approval aims to extend access to students across India and international candidates who could not attend newly introduced offline classes. Certification will be awarded by the University of Delhi on course completion.

DU SOL online foreign language courses: mode, contact sessions and platform

The primary mode is 100% online via SOL’s platform. To ensure practical speaking and listening skills, the plan includes periodic in-person contact sessions. SOL describes this as a blended approach where most instruction is digital but hands-on practice is reinforced through scheduled face-to-face sessions.

The portal will support interactive assignments and recorded video lectures to help remote learners manage study schedules from home.

Fees, eligibility and who can apply

Annual fees are estimated between ₹11,000 and ₹14,000 . Minimum academic eligibility is Class 12 (10+2) with an approximate aggregate of 45% . Admission will be open to domestic and international applicants and is expected to follow SOL’s online application processes.

These courses target students seeking language skills for careers in translation, tourism, international relations and further studies. The one-year format provides a short, credentialed path to basic-to-intermediate language competency.

    Immediate timeline and official authority

The change takes effect from the 2026–2027 academic session following the Executive Council’s recent approval. The University of Delhi and SOL are the certifying authorities for these programmes.

Details such as exact admission dates, batch sizes, reservation norms, detailed syllabi and assessment methods have not been announced publicly yet.
