NIT Rourkela new programmes 2026-27: Four deep‑tech BTech and MTech courses

NIT Rourkela has announced four new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that will start in the 2026-27 academic session, targeting artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technologies and advanced manufacturing.

The institute says the move aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and aims to strengthen multidisciplinary learning and research. Dean Academic Prof Ashok Kumar Turuk said the programmes are intended to position NIT Rourkela as a research and innovation hub in advanced science and engineering.

NIT Rourkela new programmes 2026-27: What’s offered

NIT Rourkela will offer two new BTech degrees and two MTech specialisations. Intake numbers and admission routes for each programme are below.

    Program Department Intake Admission
BTech Mathematics & Computing Mathematics 25 JEE Main
BTech Engineering Physics Physics & Astronomy 25 JEE Main
MTech Semiconductor Devices & Technology Electronics 15 GATE
MTech Machine Learning & Signal Analysis ECE 12 GATE

The BTech in Mathematics & Computing will cover machine learning, AI, cryptography and statistical modelling to bridge mathematical foundations with computing. The BTech in Engineering Physics will focus on semiconductor devices, quantum technologies, photonics and nanotechnology.

At the postgraduate level, the MTech in Semiconductor Devices & Technology will include semiconductor fabrication, wafer technology, device characterisation and packaging. The MTech in Machine Learning & Signal Analysis will focus on deep learning, image and speech processing, autonomous systems and biomedical signal analysis.

NIT Rourkela new programmes 2026-27: Admissions and eligibility

BTech admissions will be through JEE Main and require Class 12 completion with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. MTech admissions will be through GATE and require a relevant BTech degree.

Specific eligibility criteria, application steps and seat reservation details are posted by the institute. Students should check the official admissions page on nitrkl.ac.in for complete instructions and timing of counselling and seat allocation.

These programmes address growing industry demand in AI, semiconductors and quantum fields and are pitched to produce graduates ready for research and advanced manufacturing roles.
